The Euro- Mediterranean Human Rights Network launches a book-report on press freedoms situation in Jordan on the occasion of the entering into force of the EU-Jordan Association Agreement

On the occasion of the entering into force of the EU- Jordan Association agreement, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) launches its first book-report on press freedoms in Jordan and reminds the Jordanian government of its commitments towards respecting international principles of freedom of expression.

The EMHRN points in particular to the amendments to the Penal Code that Jordan has introduced in October 2001 and which allow for the suspension of newspapers and incarceration of journalists.

The book-report, written by Ms. Sa’eda Kilani, a founding member of the Network, demands the Jordanian government to uphold article 19, concerning the rights to freedom of expression, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Jordan has ratified.

As the EMHRN welcomes positive developments in the field of cooperation between the EU and Jordan, it reminds all parties concerned to uphold to Article 2 of the Association agreement which stipulates that: Respect for the democratic principles and fundamental human rights established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights shall inspire the Parties’ domestic and external policies and shall constitute an essential element of this agreement.

The EMHRN hopes that the Jordanian government takes the necessary measures to revoke the Penal Code amendments and introduce provisions that allow for access to information and freedom of the press in the country.
