Firstly, it has become a practical and genuinely, effective and living network of linked human rights organisations built from the bottom up on the basis of local need. The former Algerian Colonel Mohammed Samraoui was arrested by the Spanish police on 22 October in Benalmádena, where he had come to participate to an international chess tournament. His arrest was made in application of an international arrest warrant issued by the Algerian authorities in October 2003 on the grounds of ‘desertion, undermining the army’s morale and terrorist activity’. Increasing numbers of Iraqis are seeking to leave Iraq, their safety in the country no longer guaranteed. Since February 2006, nearly 750 000 people have fled. In total, since the beginning of the conflict, the number of displaced persons within Iraq has reached 1,9 million. According to the UNHCR’s recent estimates, 50 000 new people are currently being displaced every month. As for the number of refugees abroad, this is estimated at more than 2 million. Read more
